Do You Need a VPS for a Forex EA?
An Expert Advisor only exists while MetaTrader is open. That single fact decides the whole question, and most of what you read about forex VPS latency is answering a different one. Here is what actually breaks when the terminal stops, what Forex Success AI needs from the machine underneath it, and how to spend the least money getting there.
The short answer
An Expert Advisor is code that runs inside MetaTrader. No terminal open, no EA. So the real question is not "do I need a VPS", it is "what keeps MetaTrader running 24 hours a day, five days a week, without me thinking about it".
A VPS is one answer. A desktop with sleep switched off is another, and often better value for a single account. A laptop that sleeps when you close the lid is not.
What actually stops when the terminal stops
The reassuring part first. Every entry Forex Success AI opens carries a stop loss and take profit at the broker, 253 and 30 pips on the defaults, and the next grid level waits there as a pending limit order. Lose power at 3am and nothing is left unprotected. Be honest about what that is worth, though: 253 pips is a wide stop. It stops a position running forever. It does not make the loss small.
Everything below lives in the EA, so it only happens while the terminal runs:
- The next grid level is not replaced. The EA places each pending order off the last fill, so once the waiting one is filled price can run on with nothing in front of it.
- The basket take profit stops being unified. Once a basket holds four positions, the EA rewrites the take profit on all of them to one shared level, on a tick, from the terminal.
- The emergency gap exit cannot fire. Close_All_Gap is on by default and closes a basket when price runs past the last entry by Gap_Factor, 38 pips, with no pending order waiting.
- The daily loss and active drawdown limits cannot act, if you switched them on. Both ship off, and both are checked in the terminal, not on our server.
- Pause EA on your dashboard never arrives. The EA polls for that switch every few seconds, which is why pausing lands almost immediately. A terminal that is not running never asks.
The licence check is the one thing you can relax about. The EA validates on attach and roughly once an hour after. If it cannot reach the server it keeps its last good answer and carries on trading, and it never closes an open position because of a server problem. Only after about three hours with no successful check does it stop opening new ones. From a cold start, though, it needs one successful check before it opens anything, so a box with no internet never really starts.
Latency matters less here than you are told
VPS marketing is built on latency. For a scalper closing inside a minute that is fair. For this strategy it is close to irrelevant, and knowing why saves you money.
Entries come off a 25 period weighted moving average and a stochastic read on the chart timeframe, with the defaults tuned for H1. That view changes once an hour, not once a millisecond. The next grid entry is a pending limit order already at the broker, so it fills at your price whether your ping is 4ms or 90ms.
Latency only touches the market orders: an added position, a basket close, the gap exit. Even there the deviation tolerance is 3 points, so a bad moment gives you a rejection rather than an awful fill, and the EA tries again on a later tick. What costs you is not 40ms of ping, it is 40 minutes of downtime.
If matching the region costs nothing, do it: the Journal tab (the Toolbox in MT5, the Terminal window in MT4) logs the access point and its IP when you connect, and any IP lookup turns that into a city. Under roughly 100ms is comfortable here, and 5ms buys you nothing extra.
How much machine you actually need
Less than you are usually sold. One terminal with two charts, AUDCHF and AUDCAD on H1, which is what the defaults are tuned for, is a light load.
- RAM is the constraint, not CPU. Windows wants around 1.5GB before you open anything, then budget about 1GB per terminal. 2GB is the floor, 4GB is comfortable.
- One terminal is one account. Each licence slot binds to one MetaTrader account number, so three slots means three installations and RAM for three.
- One vCPU runs a terminal. Two gives headroom, so a Windows Update does not make the EA miss ticks.
- 40GB SSD or NVMe. A full disk stops the terminal writing logs.
- If memory is tight, lower Tools > Options > Charts > Max bars in chart to around 10000.
Then ask the host one question: does my machine restart on its own if you reboot the hardware under it? That answer beats any uptime figure on a sales page.
The free VPS, and the one that will not work
Plenty of brokers give one away against a minimum balance or traded volume. It is usually a small instance next to their own servers, which is exactly where you want it.
MetaTrader's own Virtual Hosting is not the same thing. That is the VPS tab in the MT5 Toolbox, or Register a Virtual Server from the Navigator. It is a managed hosting agent rather than a Windows machine you control, and DLL imports are not available on it. Forex Success AI needs Allow DLL imports ticked in the Common tab, because it reaches the licence server through wininet rather than MetaTrader's WebRequest. Without it the EA alerts and removes itself from the chart. To test any host, attach the EA and read the Experts tab. If you see that alert, that host will not run it.
The cheapest honest option
A desktop you already own, left on.
- Windows 11: Settings > System > Power (Power & battery on a laptop), then Screen and sleep, and set the plugged in sleep option to Never. Windows 10 has the same under Power & sleep.
- Set active hours for Windows Update, and check them again after each feature update because they get reset.
- Put a shortcut to the terminal in the startup folder (Win+R, then shell:startup) so a reboot brings it back with its profile and the EA attached.
- After any restart, confirm the toolbar button is on: AutoTrading in MT4, Algo Trading in MT5. In MT4 the face beside the EA name in the top right of the chart should be smiling, not sad. In MT5 the icon in that corner should not be crossed out.
The weaknesses are honest ones: a power cut, a router reboot, an unattended update, nobody watching at 4am. A cheap UPS covers the first two.
Check that it is actually staying up
Your dashboard marks an account Offline when the EA has not reported for ten minutes, and the account list carries a live TRADING or PAUSED badge beside it. Log in on a Tuesday, see Offline, and you know something on that machine went to sleep. No provider's status page tells you that.
Hosting does not change your lot size, which comes from your balance. If you have not set it yet, the lot size calculator gives you the number for the Lot Size input (Fix_lot in the code). The plans are in the pricing section if you are still weighing up the software. The machine it runs on is your choice and your cost either way: we sell the software, not the hosting.
